About this Course

Rhythm and groove are vital elements of any song performance. It’s what paints the mood of the piece to support the story being told by the song’s melody and lyrics. As guitarists, having ready command of a wide palette of harmonic applications, creative approaches, and right-hand techniques broadens the palette of colors that we’re able to paint with.

In this Rhythm & Rhyme Edition of Songsmith, singer-songwriter Blair Dunlop focuses on all of the essential creative tools, harmonic options, and techniques you’ll need to take your compositions and performances to the next level.

Blair is an award-winning British singer-songwriter and guitarist who has toured widely across the globe. What sets Blair apart from his peers is the lyrical and musical maturity with which he writes coupled with his technical prowess on the guitar. We’re thrilled to welcome Blair to the family with his first TrueFire course, the Rhythm & Rhyme Edition of Songsmith. You will likewise be thrilled as you play your way through his wonderfully insightful and inspiring curriculum.

“I’ll demonstrate each technique and harmonic application for you and then we’ll explore their creative potential, in the context of a song. We’ll work through 8 song performance studies using my own compositions. Whether you’re covering songs or composing your own, you’ll be able to put these approaches, techniques, tunings, and chord voicings in your own playing.”

Hybrid Picking Technique
“In this video lesson, I’ll break down the Hybrid Picking Technique. For me, this technique acts as a perfect medium between fingerpicking and flatpicking. It will allow you to really dig in with the pick when necessary, and seamlessly move between strumming and fingerpicking when you need to better accentuate individual notes.”

Within My Citadel
“This is a song that is characterized by the interplay between the melody and bass lines on the guitar. It utilizes the hybrid picking technique, which provides dynamic flexibility for exploring the spiritual imagery in the lyric. It’s in the tuning of DADGAD.”

No Go Zones
“Another song exploring the hybrid picking technique, this time in Drop D. The key is to keep the rhythm steady in the right hand and nail all the root notes through the changes. The lyric comprises a conversation between two people and the guitar should reflect this, particularly in the breaks.”

Chord Embellishments – Demonstration
“In this video lesson, I’ll discuss how a little embellishment can completely transform any song and improve your playing techniques.”

Sweet on You
“In this song, we will look at some simple chord embellishments in the key of C. These kinds of touches can really transform simple chord progressions into something much more engaging. Wide-screen, West Coast cruising vibes.”

Chain By Design
“Another song exploring standard chord embellishments, but this time a waltz, and in G. We’ll work on letting the arrangement breathe, putting licks in some suitable places, and moving between strumming and hybrid picking. Philosophical in its nature and slow in tempo, it’s important to really play off the vocal, always looking to give it room and then support when needed.”

Up On Cragside
“This song is about a figure from industrial, Victorian Britain and it follows a linear, balladic narrative, without a refrain or chorus. The guitar part, in the absence of a band, provides the incessant rhythm necessary to carry the song along. We’ll look at building up hand strength with some palm muting to achieve this.”

Pick & Flick – Demonstration
“Here I’ll demonstrate what I call the Pick & Flick Method, and discuss how you can apply this to songs you already know.”

356
“We’ll use the same frailing technique on this song, but in D and using Drop D tuning. There are a couple of bluesy chords and turns, and these are to be had fun with. Be cheeky – it’s a song about falling in love with a car you can’t afford, after all.”

Green Liquor
“A song that utilizes the pick and flick technique to support its quirky message. There is an emphasis on maintaining the tempo, as there is a percussive element to the technique, but once the control and accuracy are there, the technique is applicable to any chord sequence, so experiment.”

Thumb Picking – Demonstration
“Here I’ll demonstrate the way I approach thumb picking, and discuss the importance of keeping the sound as natural as possible.”

Blight & Blossom
“The song is split into 4 seasons, but the whole thing is underpinned by the constant throb of the thumb pick on the bass. Moving from a normal pick, this frees up an extra finger, and we’ll look at some patterns and sequences in the tuning of DADEAD. Repetition and consistency are key, especially when singing across different rhythms on the guitar.”

Blair will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.
